Chapter 12
Changing Attitudes
Finding my way to the studios was smooth sailing and I was pleased to locate an accessible parking spot; there was also an automatic door opener on the entrance of the building. Things are looking up, I thought, as far as access is concerned.
I introduced myself to the receptionist, who paged Mary Jo to meet me.
The office reception was basic in style and sparse in furniture. I was a little surprised given the studio was there to welcome visitors and encourage the world of fashion. I had been told the majority of The Bay’s merchandise was promoted through this studio, and I expected something more from its overall look.
In a few moments, Mary Jo appeared.
“Hello Wendy. It’s a pleasure to finally meet you. Did you find us all right?” she asked.
“It’s a pleasure to finally meet you as well, Mary Jo. I had no trouble at all finding you here this morning.”
Mary Jo was middle aged, with a medium build and blonde hair. She was very stylish in her appearance and stood about five feet eight inches tall. She wore a three-quarter length pant with a loose blouse and wedged heel. She was an attractive woman, with a pleasant demeanour, looking ready to jump in front of the camera herself.
“Let’s get you into the change room and start your hair and makeup. I have chosen a few outfits for you to model.”
We followed a long corridor that took the form of a maze as we made our way into the back change room. There were already two girls sitting in the hair and makeup chairs.
“Hello to you all,” I announced as I wheeled into the room. “My name is Wendy and this is my first time participating in the modelling shoot so I’d welcome any insights. Have you both been here before?”
Both models began to answer at the same time.
“Yes, I’ve been here before and I have worked with Mary Jo on many occasions inside the studio. My name is Kara.”
“My name is Liz, and I’ve been here at the studio many times. In fact, I believe they’ve designated a parking spot for me! What agency are you with Wendy?”
“My agency is Star Tracks Talent. It’s relatively new and specializes in physically challenged talent. I guess my agent saw a niche that had yet to be filled and developed her business with that concept in mind.”
“Interesting idea,” Liz replied.
“Enough of the chatting girls, there is work to be done here,” were Mary Jo’s words. “There’ll be time for socializing when we get these photos finished. Wendy, I believe Carol is ready for you.”
I moved over to Carol, the makeup artist, to begin the process. Both hair and makeup took close to an hour and I was certainly a sight by the end of both procedures. My eyes had never looked so blue and my hair was full, much like what you would see in the magazines. They added hot rollers and close to a can of hairspray, which gave my hair the full-on treatment, and a more polished effect to the overall look.
